What we have been learning this week.....
Nursery:
This week the nursery children have been learning all about Diwali and how it is celebrated. We have listened to stories, made lights and lanterns, created rangoli patterns and sang Diwali songs. In Maths, we have been learning all about the number 2. We are beginning to subitise a group of two objects and represent 2 using our fingers. We made 'listening ears' for our listening walk around the school, identifying the different sounds we could hear in our school environment.
Reception:
This week a special visitor arrived in Reception - it was a penguin! Unfortunately, he was lost from his home in Antarctica. We researched all about Antartica and thought about what we would take in our suitcase to keep us warm. He then disappeared, so we made some 'Missing' posters to help bring him back. Hopefully, he will be found over the weekend. In Maths, we have been thinking about which group has more and adding one more onto a tower of bricks to see how many we have each time. We thoroughly enjoyed our RE lesson this week when we acted out the story of the Wedding at Cana where Jesus performed his first miracle.
Year 1:
This week, in Year 1, we have continued to learn all about Guy Fawkes and the Gunpowder Plot. We have enjoyed becoming historians and diving into the past. In English, we have produced some excellent descriptive writing about fireworks preparing for our Hot Task next week. We have also enjoyed learning all about birds in science and discovering what makes them different to mammals. Finally, Mrs Hatton and Miss Butt have loved discussing all the progress that has been made so far this year during parents' evening.
Year 2:
We have had a great week. We have started to prepare for our Christmas performance, which we are really excited to show everyone in a few weeks' time. We have also been thinking about different jumps in gymnastics, thinking about jumping for height and for distance. We have continued our work in English around the Great Fire of London and will be writing our hot tasks next week! We learnt all about a healthy diet in science and even planned our own balanced meals.
Next week, we will be writing our own stories in English and adding 2 two-digit numbers together in maths.
Year 3:
This week we have been inventing our own versions of David Litchfield's story 'The Bear and the Piano' using our own choices for animals and instruments. In Maths, we have begun to work on multiplying by making arrays and, in Science, we have been learning about the process of germination. Our Year 3 children have also been working incredibly hard in their roles as attackers and defenders in both hockey and handball. We finished the week by celebrating the positive differences we can make in one another's lives when we choose to show kindness to our friends.
Year 4:
In English this week we have been looking at newspaper reports. We wrote a newspaper report about a special event in our lives for our cold task, and we have written an application form to apply to be journalists. In Maths, we have been learning our 3 and 6 times tables and learning rules to help us to remember them. Next week, we are learning our 9 times tables. In History, we wrote a letter from a soldier in the trenches about the conditions and how a soldier would feel. In RE, we looked at the rosary prayer and why it is important.
Year 5:
This week Year 5 started news texts in English and Reading. In English, we have started to read 'When the sky falls' by Phil Earle, which links to our History topic WW2. In Reading, we have begun 'Who let the Gods out?' by Maz Evans. We are enjoying reading both of these.
In Maths, we have been multiplying 3 digits by 1 digit and moved on to 2 digits by 2 digits. In RE, we have had a visit from Father Arthur to discuss in lots of detail the Seven Sacraments, focusing on the Sacrament of the Sick. In Gymnastics, we have learnt about symmetrical and asymmetrical balances and ways of travelling. In basketball, we learnt how to use a forward pivot in our game and how to avoid travelling with the ball. In Science, we have learnt about Metamorphism and compared the life cycle of a frog and butterfly.
Year 6:
In English this week we have been looking at newspaper reports. We wrote a newspaper report about a special event in our lives for our cold task and we have written an application form to apply to be journalists.
