What we have been learning this week.....
Nursery:
This week the children have been listening to the story ‘Owl Babies’ by Martin Waddell. They role played the story, taking it in turns to be one of the baby owls. We are so proud of how the children are beginning to join in and to see their confidence developing. We have been very creative, making owls with paper plates and drawing owls with circles and semi circles. Also, in Maths, we have continued learning about the number 2, counting 2, recognising 2 in the environment and finding and matching objects of 2. See if your child can go on a number 2 hunt in the home.
Reception:
Reception have had an exciting week! Luckily, the posters we made last week to see if we could help find the missing penguin worked! He came back to school and he left us a present - it was a story called 'Lost and Found'. We have enjoyed reading the story, making story maps and writing words and captions to describe the little boy. In Maths, we have learnt about circles and triangles, thinking about their properties and finding the shapes in real-life objects. In RE, we have been thinking about people who care for us and this week we said the 'Hail Mary' and we now know that this is a prayer where we can ask Mary to help and care for us.
Year 1:
In Y1, we have been writing our a letter to Custard, the dog, about Bonfire Night. We have been trying to persuade him to watch the firework display. We have tried really hard not to forget our capital letters, finger spaces and full stops too. In RE, we have been learning about prayers of intercession and then had a go at writing our own.
Year 2:
This week, we have continued to prepare for the Christmas performance. We worked in groups during PE to learn a routine, jumping into hoops in sequence. In English, we have been writing and then editing our stories. We learnt why we need to keep ourselves clean in Science and will be observing what happens to a piece of bread over the week when touched with dirty hands. In Maths, we have been adding and subtracting, including adding two 2-digit numbers. In RE, we explored what prayer is and different ways that people pray, then we wrote our own prayer.
Next week, we will continue our work on addition in Maths and begin our new text in English.
Year 3:
This week we have been working hard on our timetables in Maths. We have been particularly focusing on the 2s, 5s, 10s and 3s, so we need to keep rehearsing these at home. In English, we have been busy planning our five-paragraph narrative using possessive apostrophes based on the book 'The Bear and the Piano'. In Reading, we have started our new book called 'The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr Morris Lessmore' and have been thoroughly enjoying this. In PE, we have been learning new skills in hockey and handball. Finally, thank you to everyone who attended our meeting in church on Tuesday evening with the children who will be taking their First Holy Communion this academic year.
Year 4:
This week we have learnt about how important rationing was during WW1. We wrote a diary entry pretending to be a child experiencing the rationing. We enjoyed our class liturgies led by the children this week. 4A focused on trust and 4B focused on peace. We went on an invertebrate hunt during Science. We found many different types of invertebrates and used a classification flow chart to help us identify what they were. We also found a vertebrate (a newt). We are continuing our work on timetables in Maths. Please encourage your child to use TTRockStars and play a variety of timetable games to help their fluency. During Art, we used different painting techniques in preparation for our final art piece inspired by Georgia O'Keeffe. The children are being journalists in English and will be writing a newspaper report about when and why WW1 started.
Year 5:
This week in Year 5 we have been planning our next narrative story that includes a warning. In Maths we have begun learning about equivalent fractions and how to recognise them. In Reading we have continued reading Who Let the God's Out. In PE we have learnt to dribble in basketball and in gymnastics we learnt how to perform a roll over the shoulder. In History we learnt about children being evacuated in WW2 and how this had an effect on Britain. In Spanish we are continuing to learn about clothes and in computing we are learning how to communicate online safely.
Year 6:
This week year 6 have been planning to write a 'portal' story in English. In Maths, we have been adding and subtracting fraction and mixed numbers. In History, we looked at the founding of the NHS. In Science, we looked at Carl Linnaeus. In RE, we wrote a letter from the point of view of the Pope. In Computing we looked at 'Brute Force Hacking' and in PE, we continued with football skills.
