What we have been learning this week.....
Nursery:
This week we have been listening to the story 'Monkey Puzzle' by Julia Donaldson. We have drawn a story map to help recall what happened. A story map focuses on the characters as we talk about the beginning, middle, and end of the story.
In Maths, the children have been learning about patterns, making patterns with objects, natural materials, body percussion and printing.
Reception:
Reception had a fun week practising our songs and dances ready for the Nativity. We can't wait to show you! In Maths, we have explored the numbers 4 and 5 using numicon and counters to find our number bonds. In RE, we have been talking about different celebrations and talking about our own experiences.
Year 1:
This week we have started our new writing unit. For our Hot Task we will be writing a diary entry from Guy Fawkes. We are really enjoying learning all about his antics and how he got caught. In Maths, we have been working really hard using a number line to help us subtract. In Science, we learnt about amphibians and reptiles this week, and we really enjoyed sorting different animals into these groups.
Year 2:
Our Christmas play rehearsals are in full swing now, and we have been practising speaking loudly and clearly on stage. In Maths, we have been adding two 2-digit numbers together using the column-addition method. We have also started a new unit in English thinking about non-chronological reports and we will be building up to writing a non-chronological report about The Great Fire of London. We have continued to observe our science experiment over the week to show us the importance of washing our hands. We have also been learning about the Advent wreath and what each of the different symbols means.
Next week, we will be moving on to subtracting two 2-digit numbers, and we will be learning about different sentence types in English.
Year 3:
This week we have been busy continuing to learn our 3 and 4 times tables in Maths. In English, we have written our own narrative based on 'The Bear and the Piano' and have presented it as a little pocket book. In PE, we have continued to improve our hockey and handball skills. We have also had an exciting week by starting to rehearse some Christmas songs that we will be singing at the hospital in the coming weeks. In RE, we have continued to discuss the importance of forgiveness and saying, 'Sorry'.
Year 4:
In English this week we have written our Hot Task - a newspaper report from the day that WW1 started. In Maths, we have continued our unit on multiplication, focussing in particular on our 7s and 11s. In RE, we have started talking about the ancestors of Jesus and the stories about them in the Old Testament, along with the Jesse tree and why we think about this during Advent.
Year 5:
This week we have started our narrative writing, including a warning linked to our WW2 topic. In Maths, we have converted improper fractions to mixed numbers and solved problems relating to these. In RE, we have started our Advent work in readiness for the start of Advent this Sunday. In History, we have learnt about the Fauld explosion and discussed what happened during the Holocaust. This has been conducted in a sensitive manner and we explained the reasons as to why we learn about this period of time. In PE, we learnt how to use counterbalances in gymnastics and, in basketball, we have been practising our dribbling skills.
In Reading, we met a new character and discussed the language used by the author to describe the character in detail. In computers, we are continuing how to communicate online safely. In Spanish, we are learning about clothes and how to say, 'I am wearing' in Spanish.
