What we have been learning this week.....
Nursery:
Welcome back to all the children including those new children that have joined us since January. I hope you all had a lovely break with your families.
This week we have revisited the Nativity story, sequencing the events and recalling the characters, then we read the final part of the Nativity Story where the three Kings visited Jesus. We have also been subitising the number three in our maths activities, including patterns and sizes.
Reception:
We have been so impressed with how well the children have settled back into school after the Christmas break. It has been lovely to hear all about what they have been doing and how they celebrated Christmas. In Maths, we have been using our subitising skills to say how many dots we can see and talking about how we know, we have also been exploring zero. Next week we will be starting our new topic 'Once Upon a Time'.
Year 1:
We have started our new English text, The Jolly Postman. We have looked at the vocabulary in the text and defined what it means. We also mapped out a text map to help retell the story. In RE, we finished our Christmas unit and learnt about the special gifts from the wise men.
Year 2:
It has been wonderful to be back in school this week! We've been exploring 2D and 3D shapes in Maths and have started to look at the properties of 2D shapes. We can now describe how many sides and vertices they have. In English, we have started a new book about 'Anansi and the Golden Pot.' Our cold task was to write a story about finding a magical object in a box. In Science, we have been thinking about the suitability of different materials. We went on a material hunt around school to explore the different materials and why we think they were used for the different objects we could see.
Next week, we will be continuing our learning on 2D shapes and will be exploring lines of symmetry. We will also be continuing to build up to writing our own story about finding a magic object.
Year 3:
Happy New Year! This week we have started to work on short multiplication in Maths, thinking of different methods to multiply a 1-digit number by a 2-digit number. In English and Reading, we have started a new book called 'I Talk Like a River'. We will be writing our own stories about a fear based on this. In RE, we have been summarising and thinking about the Christmas story. Finally, in PE, we have started our unit on dance and will be creating sequences based around the book 'Matilda' by Roald Dahl.
Year 4:
We have had a brilliant first week back at school and we hope you all had a relaxing break. In Maths, we have been multiplying by 100 and dividing by 10. In English, we have started reading 'The Twits' and thinking adjectives which we could use to describe Mr and Mrs Twist. In RE, we have been explaining the Christmas Story and thinking about the importance of the messages of the angels.
Year 5:
This week, we have continued to learn how to add and subtract fractions and mixed numbers. We will be finishing this unit next week and then focusing on long multiplication. In English, we have started our new book which is called, 'The Boy in the Tower'. We have learnt about model verbs. In Science, we started our Space topic and researched the extraordinary achievements of Mae C Jemison. In RE, we are learning about the difficulties and journeys the Holy Family encountered after Jesus' birth. In Geography, we began our new topic - New York.
