What we have been learning this week.....
Nursery:
As we begin our new topic, 'Once upon a Time' the children have been listening to the story of The Gingerbread Man. They are beginning to recall characters, retell parts of the story and sequence the story with the aid of a story map. With a cold start to the mornings, the children have been able to look for ice outside in lots of different places and explore its changes, particularly when it had melted! In our Maths lessons we have been learning about the number 3, counting 3, recognising 3 and touch counting objects to 3.
See if your child can go on a number 3 hunt in the home, looking for the number 3 in books, on food packets or containers. Maybe they can find 3 objects the same!
Reception:
In our English lessons, we have been reading Jack and the beanstalk and writing some simple sentences about what happens in the story. In maths, we have found how many animals we have altogether (up to 5) and writing number sentences using + and =. In RE we have began to talk about Baptism and the different things that we might see at the service.
Year 1:
This week we have been thinking about a new product for the Wicked Witch to have in her catalogue. We thought really carefully about our sentences, making sure they all had a capital letter at the beginning and a full stop at the end. In Maths, we have been counting forwards and backwards within 20. Test us on this at home, we are getting very good. In Geography, we have been putting our map skills to the test and located Burton-on-Trent, as well as some of the surrounding villages.
Year 2:
This week in Maths, we have been continuing to look at 2D shapes. This has included drawing shapes and looking at lines of symmetry. In English, we have written exclamation sentences about our character and completed a plan that we will use to write our story. We have really enjoyed thinking about what magic object we could find and what it could do. After learning about Tingatinga art last week, we have painted the background for our own artwork. In Science, we looked at the suitability of materials for different purposes.
Next week, we will be writing our hot task, a story about finding a magic object. We will also be completing our Tingatinga-style artwork. In Maths, we will be exploring 3D shapes.
Year 3:
This week we have been working on short multiplication and the bus-stop method for division during our Maths lessons. In RE, we have written and thought about in great detail the story of Christmas. In English, we are beginning to write our narratives about a fear based on the book 'I Talk Like a River'. In Science, we have started our new topic on light, in particular we have focussed so far on how light travels. In PE, we have started two new topics; netball and a dance unit based on the story of Matilda.
Year 4:
We are absolutely loving our learning about The Twits during our English lessons. This week, we wrote a letter and role-played different ideas for tricks The Twits could play on each other.
We have learned how to use the formal method for multiplication in Maths this week. Ask us the steps you need to take to be successful as we are quite the mathematical experts! It is incredibly important that all the children in Year 4 know their timetables up to 12 times 12 to help with our mathematical learning.
In Geography, we learned about human and physical geographical features and wrote a postcard about the features found in Greece. We enjoyed mass this week and have continued our learning about Christmas in RE. Please use Spelling Shed to support our learning using the suffix '-ous'.
Year 5:
This week, in Maths, we have been subtracting mixed numbers and converting between mixed and improper fractions. Next week, we will be learning about long multiplication. In English, We explored show-not tell techniques in English, focusing on how body language, facial expression and actions demonstrate our emotions. Next week, we will be planning and writing our hot task, which is a story which involves overcoming a fear. In Reading, we predicted how Liam will react when presented with a once in a lifetime opportunity. In Geography, we explored the physical features of New York State. In Science, we explored the planets and their orbits around the sun. In RE, we have finished our Christmas unit by exploring how Jesus was homeless shortly after his birth. Please join us at St. Mary and St. Modwen's Church on Sunday at 11am for the Year 2 and 5 parish/school mass.
Year 6:
This week in English we have planned our scary stories. In Reading, we have continued with 'Tales of Terror'. In Maths, we have started to look at decimals and percentages. In RE, we have looked at the Gospel of John and how Jesus is described within it. In PE, we have practised vaulting and jumping in Gymnastics and, in Handball, we have been screening. In Geography, we have started to look at Trade, Imports and Exports.
