What we have been learning this week.....
Nursery:
The children have been very busy this week. As well as consolidating our learning of the number three with the story of 'The Three Billy Goats Gruff', the children have been learning all about number four, representing numbers up to four when making a tower with cubes and repeating the stem sentence, 'There are __ cubes altogether'. We have also been looking at the 2D shapes 'square' and 'rectangle', as both these shapes have four sides.
Reception:
This week Reception have been learning to use balance scales to compare objects. We have been using the words 'heaviest', 'lightest' and 'balanced' to compare different objects, as well as making predictions. The children have enjoyed using the balance scales in their play. In RE, we have been naming special objects during the Baptism celebration. In English, we have been acting out the story and writing speech bubbles for different characters in Jack and the Beanstalk. Next week we will be reading 'The Three Little Pigs'. We will be exploring different materials to see which ones we should use to build the roof on a new house for the pigs!
Year 1:
In Year 1, we have been preparing for our Hot Task, where we have written a new part for The Jolly Postman. We have thought carefully about our sentence structure and what the perfect sentence includes. In Science, we have been looking at properties of materials and making sure we know the difference between objects and the material. In Maths, we have been using the comparison signs to compare numbers.
Year 2:
We have had an exciting week in Year 2 this week! It all started with an informative talk from Packington Farms on Monday. We learnt all about different farm animals, their diets, their habitats and what we can get from them. We have also written our own magic object stories in English. We really enjoyed thinking of the characters and the plot of our stories. In Maths, we have been learning all about 3D shapes and their properties. We explored different materials in Science and thought about how we can change materials by bending, squashing, stretching and twisting them.
Next week, we will be moving on to learning about money. You can practise recognising different coins and notes to prepare for this. In English, we will be beginning to plan our fact files about Emmanuel Ofosu Yeboah.
Year 3:
This week, in Year 3, we have started our new topic of length and perimeter in Maths, this has included accurately measuring in cm and mm. In English, we have begun our hot task, writing a story about a fear using descriptive words for our characters. In Reading, we have started our new book called 'Leon and the Place Between', we have been using the front cover to make our predictions. In Science, we have been thinking about the dangers of the sun and the effects it can have on our eyes. In PE, we have continued to create our class dance based on Matilda and the characters within the story. In History, we have written some incredible essays based on the differences between today and the Stone Age.
Year 4:
In English this week we have planned and written our Hot Task, which was to write another chapter for the Twits. We thought about what trick they could play on each other, then thought about adding speech using inverted commas, fronted adverbials and adjectives to make our writing interesting. In Maths, we have been working really hard on the bus stop method for dividing a 2-digit number by a 3-digit number. On Thursday, we joined together as classes for our class liturgies and explored the words 'compassionate' (4B) and 'forgiveness' (4A), including how we can go forth and show compassion and forgiveness in our every day lives.
Year 5:
This week, in Maths, we have been multiplying 4 x 2 digits. This requires really sharp times table knowledge, so please get practising at home using TT Rockstars. In English, we have written our hot task which was a tale of fear. In Reading, we looked at the zodiac signs and tried to categorise our characters into a star sign using what we know about them. In RE, we learnt about Jesus' baptism and how it marked the beginning of his ministry. In Geography, we had a great time learning about the human features of New York City and we looked at famous landmarks. In Science, we learnt about how the earth's rotation causes us to experience night and day. In PE, we played communication games.
