What we have been learning this week ...
Nursery:
This week the children have been fine tuning their singing for their Nativity performance for parents, and what a fab job they did!
We have started our Advent journey learning all about the advent wreath, focusing on the first candle of HOPE.
Together we dressed our prayer corner and our RE display to reflect this.
Reception
This week has been very busy in Reception. On Tuesday and Thursday, we performed our Christmas Nativity to parents and it was brilliant. We were amazing on stage and shone through with our beautiful singing. We have also begun our Advent journey and learnt about the first Advent candle, Hope.
Year 1:
This week we have been very busy! We have been practising our Nativity and the children are doing a fantastic job learning their dances and songs. We also started to learn all about Advent, talking about what it means and why it is an important time of waiting and preparation. In English, we have been planning our Hot Task so that we are ready to write our Guy Fawkes diary entries next week. The children have shown great enthusiasm, and we are excited to see their wonderful writing!
Year 2:
We have had another busy week in year 2! In Maths, we have moved onto shape, looking at 2D and 3D and counting how many sides different shapes have. In English, we have been researching the Great Fire of London and creating actions to go alongside our story map. We have also been looking at questions, statements and exclamations. In RE, we looked at the relevance of the symbols on the Advent Wreath.
Year 3:
Year 3 have done some fantastic learning this week.
In Maths, we have started our new topic of multiplication and division and the children have been fantastic at sorting equal groups and working with arrays. In English, we have been practising using fronted adverbials ready for our hot task next week and we have also started a new text - The Iron Man - in Reading. In Science, we have looked at how to avoid food waste and, in History, we continue to explore The Stone Age. We also thoroughly enjoyed our livestream event for Advent today with Dan and Emily.
Year 3/4:
This week, in English, we have been studying the story of the Christmas Truce during World War One. We have also been learning about possessive apostrophes and fronted adverbials. In Reading, Y3 have enjoyed their new book - The Iron Man. Year 4 have spent time analysing character behaviour in their book - The Firework Maker's Daughter. In Maths, we learnt factors, pairs and how to multiply and divide by 0, 1, 10 and 100. In History, we learnt about the extraordinary zeppelin raids which caused death and destruction in Burton and Derby during World War One.
We have continued to practice our carol singing in advance of our performances next week. Remember, we will be singing carols at 3pm on Wednesday on the school playground (end of KS2 concourse) . Please remember to continue with weekly homework of reading, times tables practice, learning KIRF statements, which we will be testing soon, and learning weekly spelling rules. There is still a few weeks to complete and return termly homework projects. Thank you to all who have returned some already.
Year 5:
Year 5 have had a busy and exciting week! In Music, the children have been learning to play the ukulele, practising chords and developing their confidence. In English, they created powerful Blitz-inspired poems using vivid imagery, while in Reading they explored the drama and rich language of 'The Highwayman'. In Maths, we worked on adding and subtracting fractions. We also began our Advent learning in RE and the children created a clear and thoughtful guide for people who are new to Advent.
Year 6:
This week we have started our new English topic - Mona Baptiste. We are looking at biographies and the lives of famous 'Windrush Legacy' personalities. In Maths, we have been calculating percentages. In RE, we have continued to look carefully at the two parts of Advent. In History, we looked at how culture changed after the war. In Art, we have started our main pieces of artwork inspired by Yayoi Kusama. In Reading, we are looking at characters: how they feel and what kinds of personalities they have.
