Dear Parents and Carers

Welcome to this week’s newsletter!

A super second week back this week, and a slightly warmer one!  A huge well-done to the 50 Key Stage 2 pupils who took part in Young Voices in Birmingham on Wednesday.  This incredible event brings together thousands of children from across the country to form one of the world’s largest school choirs, and our pupils represented the school brilliantly with their enthusiasm, teamwork and sheer love of singing.  Many thanks to the parents and staff who also supported this event.

This week, all Key Stage 1 and 2 children have watched an important Network Rail safety video, and I would encourage parents to read the accompanying information included in this newsletter to help reinforce these vital messages at home.  I am also delighted to share that my Tuesday morning run club returns this coming Tuesday - children from Years 2 to 6 are very welcome to join, and places can be booked via Parent Mail.

Wishing you all a lovely, restful weekend.

What we have been learning about this week .....

Nursery:

As we begin our new topic, Once upon a Time, the children have been listening to the story of The Gingerbread Man.  They are beginning to recall characters and retell parts of the story.   In our Maths lessons we have been learning about subitising up to 3 objects, recognising 3 and touch counting objects to 3.

See if your child can look out for the number 3 in your home, in books on food packets or containers.  Look out for numbers in the outdoor environment to see what they can recognise.  Maybe they can find 3 objects the same!

Reception:

This week, Reception have been learning all about Jack and the Beanstalk.  We were given some magic beans on Monday and, when we came to school on Tuesday, the beans had turned into a beanstalk.  We were so amazed!  We have enjoyed listening to the story and have also been keen to act it out.  In Maths, we have been exploring one more and one less and worked very hard on our letter formation.  Next week, we will be beginning our new RE unit of Baptism.

Year 1:

This week we have started our new story in English. 'Stanley's Stick'.  We really enjoyed going outside to find our own special stick and thought of adjectives to describe it!  We have read part of the story and have completed our cold task, thinking carefully about what might happen to the stick next!  In Maths, we have looked at place value within 20, talking about how many tens and ones there are in the number.  Then we used a number track to help us think of one more and one less within 20.  In RE, we have retold the story about the birth of Jesus and used our Talk4Writing skills to act it out.

Year 2:

This week, in Maths, we have continued our learning about money.  The children have been practising making the same amount using different combinations, as well as choosing the correct notes and coins.  They have shown growing confidence in recognising values and explaining their choices.  In English, we have been learning how to use apostrophes for contractions.  The children then applied this knowledge in a short burst of writing about finding a magical object, where they focused on using new and adventurous vocabulary.  It was lovely to see their creativity and enthusiasm coming through in their writing.  In RE, we have been learning about the journey of the Wise Men and reflecting on how we can be like the bright star by guiding others to Jesus in our everyday lives.  The children shared thoughtful ideas about showing kindness, helping others, and making positive choices as ways to live out this message today.

Year 3:

We have had a super week getting on with all of our new topics and learning.  We have now finished The Iron Man in Reading and have moved on to reading The Spiderwick Chronicles.  In English, the children have been preparing to write their own portal story and, in Maths, the children have now completed looking at their 3, 4 and 8 times tables, although we will continue to practise these throughout the year.  In Geography, we have looked at different aspects of rivers and, in RE, the children have been thinking carefully about the manger scene and what it means to them.

Year 4:

This week,  we have been continuing our RE topic on Christmas by researching some modern day messengers of God and creating a fact file about them.  These included Mother Theresa, Pope John Paul and Francis of Assisi.  In English, we have been working on our current book, 'The Twits'.  We have made up our own tricks and used drama to show these.  We have also been looking at the structure Roald Dahl used to write each chapter.  In Reading, we have been enjoying 'How to Train Your Dragon' and have been working on the language used, particularly focusing on prosody.  In Maths, we have been working out the perimeter of rectilinear shapes.  In Geography, we have started our new topic of modern day Greece.

Year 5:

We thoroughly enjoyed tag rugby during PE this week, as well as dance where we sequenced movements.  During Maths, we concluded our multiplication and division unit and have started our fraction unit, where we have been multiplying fractions.  We have used relative clauses in English to help bring our Tale of Fear alive.  During RE, we discussed the journeys made during Christmas and how the travellers may have been feeling.  Please encourage you child to access TTRockStars, Spelling Shed and read Theory at home.

Year 6:

This week we have been planning for our narrative hot-task in English.  In Maths, we have started looking at Ratio and Proportion.  In Reading, we have continued with 'The Raven'.  In Science, we did an experiment to investigate the link between exercise and heart rate.  In RE, we looked at images and art associated with Christmas.  In Computing, we did some E-Safety work and, in Spanish, we are looking at vocabulary and phrases to do with school.
