23/01/2026 School Newsletter

                                          Friday 23rd January 2026

Dear Parents and Carers

Welcome to this week’s newsletter!

This week has been full of great learning opportunities, starting with today’s RSPB Big Garden Watch, which was shared with the children in assembly this morning. The Big Garden Watch is a nationwide citizen science project that encourages people to spend one hour observing and counting the birds they see, helping the RSPB understand how UK bird populations are changing and to reinforce our job as stewards of God's creation.  An email has been sent to parents with resources to support taking part at home this weekend, and we ask that any completed observation information is returned to school next week so we can collate our results together.  Looking ahead, I would also like to highlight our phonics workshops for EYFS and Year 1 parents, taking place after school on Wednesday 28th January.  These sessions are extremely important as they will explain how phonics is taught in school and how you can best support your child’s reading at home.  Finally, Year 3 and Year 5 parents have been emailed this week as two school trips are now live on ParentMail for consent and payment: Year 5 will be visiting the Space Centre on Wednesday 11th March, and Year 3 and Year 4 will be visiting the Derby Open Centre on Friday 11th May.  Thank you, as always, for your continued support - it makes a real difference to our children’s learning and experiences.

Wishing you all a lovely weekend,

What we have been learning about this week .....

Nursery:

The children have been very busy this week.  As well as consolidating our learning of the number three with counting, recognition and subitising three, we have also linked the number 3 with 2D triangles as they have 3 straight sides and three corners.  The children have continued to listen to the story of the Gingerbread Man and have been very creative designing and decorating their own gingerbread salt dough person.  We have also been investigating freezing and melting and properties of ice.  We have been freezing small toys in water and letting children melt or set them free.  They have realised that ice is hard when frozen and that it melts and turns into water.

Reception:

This week we have been continuing our learning about Jack and the Beanstalk. We listened really carefully to the story and thought about what Jack could see at the top.  In Maths, we have been comparing mass and finding a balance.  We used lots of different loose parts to weigh.

Year 1:

Year 1 have had a busy and enjoyable week of learning.  In Maths, we have been comparing numbers to 20 and using our understanding to say which numbers are greater, smaller or equal.  In RE, we explored the meaning behind parables, focusing on The Good Samaritan and The Prodigal Son, and discussed the messages these stories teach us.  In English, the children have been describing Stanley, using adjectives to bring their ideas to life and developing their descriptive writing skills.

Year 2:

This week, year 2 have been working incredibly hard across the curriculum.  In Maths, we have completed our money unit, where the children practised recognising finding change and solving two-step word problems.  In English, the children planned and wrote an exciting narrative about discovering a magical object.  They focused on making their writing more engaging by using conjunctions, expanded noun phrases and apostrophes for contractions.  In RE, we learnt about the Flight to Egypt and have now begun a new unit exploring parables and miracles.

Year 3:

Year 3 have a had a great week this week.  In English, the children have been writing their own portal story for their Hot Task - we've had some wonderful characters being transported to all sorts of different places!  In Maths, we have continued to explore multiplication and have been practising multiplying a 2-digit number by a 1-digit number.  The children are really enjoying The Spiderwick Chronicles in Reading and we have linked past and current topics in Geography by comparing the river Trent to the river Ganges.  In RE, the children have been great at remembering and describing the different parts of Mass and, in Science, we have explored how fossils are made!

Year 4:

This week we have started writing our Hot Task in English, which is a narrative all about 'The Twits' playing a trick on each other.  In Maths, we have completed our unit on area and perimeter and will now be moving on to fractions.  We have also continued to practice our times tables, in preparation for the multiplication test. In RE, we have started our new topic 'Jesus teaches us how to pray' and have started to focus on Judaism and what a synagogue is.  In PE, we have been enjoying gymnastics and basketball.  In Geography, we have continued our topic on Greece by focusing on the human and physical features.

Year 5:

Year 5 have had a great week!  In English, we are continuing to plan our tales of fear ready for our hot task which we will start on Friday.  In Maths, we have learnt how to find fractions of an amount.  In Reading, we continue to read 'Cosmic'.  In RE, we have started learning about marriage and holy order and, in Science, we continue to learn about space and the solar system.

Year 6:

This week we have had an assessment week.  As well as this, we have been continuing with our Hot Writing Task in English.  In RE, we have looked at the Baptism of Jesus.  We have started our Gymnastics unit in PE and looked at the achievements of Thomas Edison in Science.
