30/01/2026 School Newsletter

Dear Parents and Carers

Welcome to this week’s newsletter!

As we come to the end of another busy and rewarding week, I would like to thank you for your continued support of our school community.  In particular, my sincere thanks go to our Reception and Key Stage 1 parents who attended the phonics workshop this week.  Your engagement really does make a difference - when children hear and use the same phonics language at home and at school, it greatly strengthens their confidence and progress as readers.

I would also like to remind Year 4 parents about the Multiplication Tables Check meeting taking place after school next Wednesday.  This will be a valuable opportunity to understand how we support children with their times tables and how you can help at home.  Please book your place through ParentMail.

We are very much looking forward to welcoming parents of children in 2A for lunch with your child on Wednesday.  These occasions are always a joy for the children.  Please remember to book your place via ParentMail if you have not already done so.

As we look ahead to Sunday, the Gospel reading focuses on the Beatitudes.  These remind us that kindness, humility, mercy and a gentle heart are strengths to be celebrated. They encourage us - and our children - to look for goodness in others and to be peacemakers in our everyday lives, both at school and at home.

Thank you, as always, for your partnership and support.  I wish you all a restful and happy weekend.

What we have been learning about this week .....

Nursery:

As we continue with our topic, Once upon a Time, the children have been listening to the story of 'Goldilocks and the Three Bears'.  They are so much more confident in joining in with repeated phrases, retelling and sequencing the story with additional resources.  The story opens up lots of mathematical language about size and also consolidates our previous learning of the number three.

In Maths, we have been learning all about the number four, learning that the last number reached when counting a small set of objects tells you how many there are in total.

Reception:

This week we have learnt all about the 3 little pigs.  In English, we have been writing sentences about the wolf blowing down the houses.  We were very good at remembering capital letters, full stops and finger spaces.  In Maths, we have been exploring the numbers 6, 7 and 8 and finding 1 more and 1 less.  In RE, we have continued our learning about Baptism and have been using the vocabulary extremely well.

Year 1:

This week the children have been learning about the miracles of Jesus in RE.  They have enjoyed discussing these stories and talking about what they teach us about kindness, care and helping others.

In Maths, we have been learning how to count on to help us solve addition problems.  The children have been practising starting from the biggest number and counting forwards carefully.

In English, we have been planning our Hot Task.  The children have been thinking about their own ideas and characters, ready to write their own story.

Year 2:

In Maths this week, we have moved on to learning about multiplication and division.  The children have been exploring multiplication by making equal groups and by adding equal groups together.  We have been developing our understanding that the multiplication symbol (x) means lots of, times or groups of.  In English, we have started a new book called 'Emmanuel’s Dream'.  The children have been super engaged with this inspiring story.  We have been internalising the story by creating story maps and boxing up the text to help us understand its structure.  In RE, we have continued our learning about miracles and parables, thinking about what they teach us.  We have also learnt about the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick, discussing its meaning and why it is important in the Catholic faith.

Year 3:

Year 3 have been very busy this week!  We have started a new book in our English lessons called 'Once Upon a Raindrop', and have been exploring explanation texts to help us plan our own writing about the water cycle.  In Maths, we have been looking at solving division problems using our multiplication knowledge and the bus-stop method.  In RE, we have looked at The Eucharist and how this links to The Last Supper and, in Science, we have enjoyed exploring different types of soil.

Year 4:

This week we have been busy with our times tables, yet again, as well as starting our new unit on fractions.  In English, we have written our Hot Task based on a new trick by the Twits and have now started researching the author Roald Dahl, who we will be writing a biography about.  In RE, we have been studying the religion of Judaism and the story of a young Jesus in the Temple.  In Geography, we have been looking at different climate zones, whilst comparing Athens with Vancouver.

Year 5:

This week year 5 have had another busy week!

In English, we have finished writing our hot tasks and moved on to our non-fiction writing.  In Maths, we continue to learn about fractions and decimals.  In Reading, we continue to read Cosmic.  In RE, we learnt about the role of bishops, deacons, and priests.  Next week is assessment week, it would be great to go over times tables (TTrockstars) and Spelling Shed in preparation for next week.

Year 6:

This week we have been working hard in English as we begin our new non-fiction unit about Latin America.  In Maths, we have finished Ratio and Proportion and will be starting Algebra on Monday.  In Reading, we have developed our understanding of 'The Raven'.  In RE, we have looked at what happens during the Sacraments of Baptism and Confirmation.  In PE, we practised balancing and rolling in Gymnastics; and passing and dribbling in Hockey.

In Computing, we used spreadsheets to demonstrate how information can be encrypted.  In Geography, we looked at what Fair Trade means.
