Dear Parents and Carers

Welcome to this week’s newsletter!

This week, Years 1–5 have taken part in assessment week, and I have been so impressed with the children’s positive, resilient approach to these challenges. They have demonstrated exactly the skills we aim to instil in them for the future -determination, confidence and a readiness to tackle new learning.  These assessments will help us support the children as we move into next half-term and will also inform our reporting to you at the upcoming Parents’ Evenings.  Please do book your appointment via Arbor; the booking system will open at 7pm on 9th February.

I would also like to remind parents and carers to be considerate when parking or stopping on the road outside school, particularly in the bus stop and slip road. Recently, we have noticed some families arriving to collect children as early as 2:20pm, despite the gates not opening until 2:50pm. This early arrival is causing congestion, inconvenience to visitors and staff who need to access the school during the day, and - most importantly - it poses a risk in the event that emergency vehicles need to reach the school quickly.  Please help us keep everyone safe by arriving at the appropriate time and parking respectfully.

Next week, we look forward to welcoming Y2B parents into school for Parent Lunch on Wednesday - a lovely opportunity to share time together.  It is also the second First Holy Communion preparation meeting for Year 3 parents and pupils, held in St Mary & Modwen church at 6pm.  Please keep the children preparing for this special sacrament in your prayers.

Wishing you all a wonderful weekend.

What we have been learning about this week .....

Nursery:

This week the children have been learning all about Baptism, a celebration welcoming them into God's family.  We have re-enacted a baptism, baptising one of our own 'babies' and giving them a name.  This will continue next week in the children's own role play where they can baptise a doll, give them a name and bless them with water.  We have also been practising recognition and writing of our name, consolidating our learning of the number 4, size ordered objects from our story and made a paper plate Goldilocks!

Reception:

This week, we have been learning about our name and how important it is during a Baptismal ceremony. We learnt that this helps us to understand that God is welcoming us into his family.  In English, we wrote a WANTED poster to help catch the big, bad wolf.  We used our Phonics very carefully and even remembered to use capital letters, finger spaces and full stops.

Year 1:

What an incredible week we have had in Year1!

The children have truly amazed us during our assessment week with their brilliant focus and the fantastic amount of information they have remembered.  It has been a joy to see them showcase their progress and grow in confidence as they recalled their learning from across the term.

In our RE lessons, we have been exploring the miracles of Jesus, focusing on how he helped others in need.

Year 2:

We have had a very busy and productive time in Year 2 this week as the children have been completing their assessments.  We are incredibly impressed with the effort they have put in and the progress they are making.  They have shown great resilience and focus.

In RE, we have continued our learning about parables, encouraging the children to think more deeply about the messages and lessons behind them.  We have explored the Parable of the Sower, discussing how people respond differently to God’s word and what this might mean for our own lives.  We have also been learning about the Parable of the Talents, reflecting on the importance of using our gifts and abilities well and helping others.

Year 3:

Year 3 have had a busy week completing assessments in Maths, Reading and Spelling/Grammar.  All the children have worked so hard and have put all of their effort into showing how much they have learnt – we are very proud of them!  In RE, the children have been discussing the Eucharist and how, through communion, we are closer to God.  They have even thought about events from Jesus' life that they can link this part of the Mass to.  In Geography, the children completed some excellent information posters about Rivers and, in Science, we have thought about the impact human life has had on soil and the environment.

Year 3/4:

This week in Year 3/4, we have been learning about the Eucharist in RE.  In Maths, we have been learning about units of length and perimeter.  In English, we have been writing a biography about Roald Dahl.  In Science, we have been investigating which materials conduct electricity.  Next week is our homework celebration assembly, so please bring in any completed homework.

Year 4:

This week in year 4, we have been working hard on fractions.  This has included equivalent fractions, recognising a whole and converting mixed numbers to improper fractions.  In English, we have been writing a biography about the author Roald Dahl.  In Reading, we have now finished 'How to Train your Dragon' and have been thinking of the themes in the book.  In Science, we have been using the computers to create a simple electrical circuit.  In RE, we have focussed deeply on the 'Our Father' and thinking of the meaning of each line.

Year 5:

Year 5 have had a fantastic week and should feel very proud of themselves, especially during assessment week, where they showed great focus and determination in all their learning.  In PE, they enjoyed developing their teamwork and fitness skills through exciting games of tag rugby.  In English, they worked hard on organising their ideas clearly by using bullet points, helping to improve their writing structure.  In RE, the class wrote thoughtful and respectful prayers for the priest, showing care, understanding and reflection in their work.

Year 6:

This week in Year 6 we have started our new book in Reading lessons: The Girl of Ink and Stars.

We have written about Mexico and the Panama Canal in English lessons using parentheses and semicolons.  In Maths, we have started to learn Algebra – expressions, formulae and substitution. In RE, we have looked at the Gifts of the Holy Spirit and how we can choose to use them.  In Geography, we looked at the topographical features of El Salvador and considered why the country finds it difficult to trade.  In Science, we made virtual electrical circuits and fixed broken circuits.  In PE, we practised jumps and rolls.  In Computing, we practised using spreadsheets to carry out calculations.

Early Years

We’re looking to enhance our Early Years outdoor area with new ride-on toys such as sitting cars, scooters, and small bikes.  If you’re able to donate any good-quality items your child no longer uses, we would be incredibly grateful.  Your support helps us create a fun, active, and engaging space for all our children to enjoy.

Thank you for your generosity.
