Dear Parents and Carers

Welcome to this week’s newsletter!

As we come to the end of the first half-term of Spring, I want to reflect on what has been another busy and rewarding few weeks at St Modwen’s.  We have finished the half-term with a superb focus on Design and Technology, and it has been wonderful to see such impressive examples of skills emerging across the school - from creative model-making to thoughtful engineering projects and some outstanding cooking.

This half-term we have also said a fond farewell to two valued members of staff, Mrs Whitely and Mrs Elsigood.  Both have worked closely with pupils, parents and families over many years, and I am sure you will join me in thanking them for their dedicated service to St Modwen’s and wishing them every success for the future.

I would also like to acknowledge my brilliant running club, who have turned up on Tuesday mornings without fail - whatever the weather.  From freezing conditions to torrential rain, their determination has been remarkable, and I am incredibly proud of them.  We will be running at the Junior Parkrun at Swadlincote Memorial Park on Sunday 8th March, and all pupils are warmly welcome to join us for a 9am start.

I wish you all a relaxing and restful half-term break, and I look forward to welcoming the children back to school on Tuesday 24th February.

What we have been learning about this week .....

Nursery:

This week we have been listening to the story of 'The Enormous Turnip', as well as consolidating our learning on Baptism.  In Maths, we have been learning all about the number 5.  Children are learning that the last number reached when counting a set of objects tell you how many objects there are  altogether.  Quite often the children will recount when asked 'how many were there?'  Therefore, we are using the language where we are saying just the total amount once we have finished counting., e.g. 'There are 5 altogether'.  Try this at home.

Reception:

This week Reception have been continuing their learning around The Three Little Pigs.  We have tested to see which material would make a good roof when building them a new house and used lots of vocabulary to describe it.  We have also been learning all about The Three Little Wolves and The Big Bad Pig.  It was interesting to hear the reverse of the original story.  We have practised recalling our doubles to 5 and 8 by using ladybirds and butterflies to help us consolidate our learning on this.  We also learnt all about the Presentation of Jesus in The Temple in RE.

We wish you a restful half-term.

Year 1:

The children have thoroughly enjoyed DT Project Week, where they have been designing and making their very own puppets.  The classroom was full of imagination and excitement!

In Maths, we have been focusing on recalling number bonds to 20 and practising our doubles.  The children have been using these skills to help them solve a variety of addition problems more confidently and quickly.  We are encouraging them to recall these facts fluently, and any extra practice at home would be greatly beneficial.

In RE, we have been learning about the story of Jesus healing the blind man. The children thought carefully about how the people in the story might have felt and discussed themes of kindness, trust and belief.  They asked some thoughtful questions and shared some lovely ideas.

Year 2:

We have had another busy week in year 2!  In Maths, we have been learning the 2 times tables and practising dividing by 2.  We have also been linking this to our understanding of halving and doubling.

In English, the children completed their Hot Task, where they wrote a fact file about Emmanuel’s Dream.  We focused particularly on including a clear title and using subtitles to organise our information.  The children worked very hard to present their facts clearly and confidently.  In RE, we read the parable of the lilies in the field.  We discussed how the message teaches us to trust God to provide everything we need, and the children shared some thoughtful reflections during our class discussion.

Year 3:

Year 3 have had a fantastic last week of half-term.  They have written some fantastic information texts using their knowledge about rivers and the water cycle and have been working hard on division with remainders.  In Science, we have planned out an investigation to find out which soil is most absorbent and we look forward to carrying this out after half-term!  For DT week, the children have designed, made and evaluated some absolutely brilliant 3D papier mache river models.

Year 4:

In Year 4 we have had a busy week with our assessments in which the children have applied themselves very well.  We have also been enjoying DT week.  Our topic this time is to create Greek or Roman sandals.  In RE, we have been looking at the story of Jesus visiting Mary and Martha.  We have also started to look at the songs for the Easter play, which we are very excited about.

Year 5:

Year 5 have had a great last week.  It has been DT week this week and everyone has enjoyed making their money containers and they have all done a great job.  In English, we have written our survival guides.  In Maths,  we learnt about thousandths as fractions.  In Reading, we continue to read cosmic.  In RE, we learnt about ordination and how it is a sign of the person being chosen to serve in the church as a priest.  In PE, we continued practising our dance routines to different types of music.  In Science, we created some posters about the moon and Mae C Jemison.

Year 6:

This week in English we have been finishing our Hot Task about South America and trade.  In Maths, we have finished our work on Algebra and, in Science, we investigated circuits.  In DT, we designed and made bread.  In RE, we looked at the similarities and differences between Aaron and David.

We hope everyone has a restful half-term break.  We would also encourage the children to do some homework - little and often, as we have a busy term when we return.  Homework can be found in the Google Classroom.

Early Years

We’re looking to enhance our Early Years outdoor area with new ride-on toys such as sitting cars, scooters, and small bikes.  If you’re able to donate any good-quality items your child no longer uses, we would be incredibly grateful.  Your support helps us create a fun, active, and engaging space for all our children to enjoy.

Thank you for your generosity.
