Nursery:
What Happens in Winter?
The children have been listening to the story 'Kipper’s Snowy Day' by Mick Inkpen. They are beginning to recall characters and retell parts of the story. They have made snowmen with collage materials and drawn snowmen using different sized circles. Also, in Maths, we have been learning about the number 2, counting 2, recognising 2 in the environment and finding and matching objects of 2. See if your child can go on a number 2 hunt in the home.
Reception:
This week Reception have been learning to retell the Christmas story and sharing their knowledge with others. We have created story maps, ordered the story and even drew a lovely picture of who visited Jesus in the stable. We have been so impressed with how well all the children have remembered the key parts of the story. In Maths, we have been exploring zero and also comparing amounts using the language equal and unequal.
Year 1:
We have been retelling the Christmas story through sequencing and writing. We acted out the story and became the characters. In English, we started our new class text, 'The Wisp', where the magic of a promise comes to life. We've had a lovely first week back.
Year 2:
It's been a busy, full week back in Year 2, and we are all ready to take on the New Year!
We are really excited about our new topic, 'Africa', and have been exploring where this is on the map, as well as looking at all the other continents too. Sticking with our Africa theme, in English, we have started to look at 'Meerkat Mail' by Emily Gravett. During our 'hook' lesson, we learnt all about the meerkat species, where they live, what they eat and, more excitingly, we had a sneak peek of some meerkats in wildlife parks around the world on live webcams! We loved watching them scurry in and out of their burrows and interacting with each other! We have just started multiplication and division in maths, so we are encouraging lots of tables practise at home! In RE, we have been thinking about how both Mary and Joseph would have felt on the way to Bethlehem and at the birth of Jesus.
Year 3:
Happy New Year! Year 3 have had a great first full week back. Many of the children were thrilled to be a part of the Young Voices choir, singing alongside musical greats like Heather Small. In History, we have continued our 'great artists' topic and this week we have been looking at the civil rights movement, paying particular attention to the music of Ella Fitzgerald. This has helped us with our English work as we have been writing a biography all about her life. In RE, we have revisited the Christmas story and have written about the Nativity. In Maths, we have continued to work on the 3 and 4 times tables, we will need to keep practising this at home using TT Rockstars as often as possible.
Year 4:
We have been tricked this week! The Twits are our writing inspiration at the moment, and they spend their days tricking each other. We were shocked to find our pens and pencils had been taped to the ceiling by a trickster! During Maths, we have been using our place value knowledge to times and divide by 10 and 100. In Geography, we discovered where in the world Greece is, and we used the iPads to create a fact file about the country. Our spelling rule this week has been '-ous'. These spelling words can be found on Spelling Shed, for which log-ins have been sent home.
Year 5:
We have been subtracting mixed numbers in maths using physical manipulatives to help us understand the concept of breaking the whole. In English, we have started studying her new book - the Boy in the Tower. We have been examining how the author builds suspense through the choice of vocabulary and, in particular, the use of abstract nouns. In Reading, we have enjoyed reading our new novel 'Cosmic' by Frank Cottrell-Boyce - Mr Quinn's favourite. In RE, we have finished our Christmas unit and have been looking at how Jesus was a refugee when the Holy Family fled to Egypt after his birth. In PE, we have started learning how to play hockey and enjoyed dance on Thursday.
Year 6:
We have started our new scary book: 'Tales of Terror'. In Maths, we have finished looking at Metric and Imperial measures. In English, we have started to plan to write a persuasive letter about Fair Trade. In Geography, we have started our new Fair Trade topic. We have finished our History topic: Britain after the War.
In Music, we have started our Rock and Roll topic. In PE, we have started Gymnastics and Handball. In Spanish, we are learning the vocabulary of the town and how to ask for directions.
