What we have been learning this week.....
Nursery:
What a busy week the children have had! They have learnt two new nursery rhymes this week, Twinkle Twinkle and One Potato, Two Potato. In Maths, the theme has continued around the secondary colours and activities have reflected this.
We have been learning about all the things God has made in our Creation topic and have enjoyed listening to Dan and Emily, joining in with the songs.
Next week we will be looking at our families. Please help us if you can and send in a family photograph for the children to share. Email: nursery@st-modwens.staffs.sch.uk
Reception:
This week Reception had a visitor in their classroom who left some interesting objects behind! After talking about them, we realised that a superhero had been in our classroom at lunchtime! We then read 'Superkid' and talked about what makes us special. We have been practising writing our names and the sounds we have learnt in our phonics lessons. We have also been impressing our teachers with our drawing and imaginative ideas in Drawing Club. This week we read 'Jack and the Beanstalk'. We then thought about what our giant would look like and designed his castle. In Maths, we have been learning all about the numbers 1, 2 and 3, and the different ways to represent them.
Year 1:
In Year 1, we have been learning all about adjectives and including them in our sentences. We have been making sure our sentences have a capital letter and full stop, whilst also making sure we use our Phonics. In Geography, we have been learning about the surrounding seas around the UK and what their capital cities are. It's been fun listening to the United Kingdom song too! In Science, we have been impressing Miss Butt and Mrs Hatton with an existing knowledge of human body parts.
Year 2:
This week we have been authors! We have written our own journey story using our book of 'Poles Apart' as inspiration. In PE, we have been using a story of a penguin to inspire us to create our own dance routine. We thought about the differences between fish and birds in science and the climate of the Arctic and Antarctic regions in geography.
Next week, we will be moving on to a new book in English and will be continuing our learning about place value in Maths.
Year 3:
This week we have been continuing our work in RE all about belonging. We have started to learn about the seven sacraments and the importance of them on our Catholic journey through life. In English, we are building up to writing our first hot task, where we are writing a narrative based on the book 'Hike' using expanded noun phrases. In Maths, we have completed our unit on place value and have moved on to addition and subtraction, with the aim of moving towards formal written methods.
Year 4:
In Maths this week, we have learnt how to read Roman numerals, and we have started rounding to 10. In English, we have been looking at the use of inverted commas and thought about what the setting will look like in our story next week for our hot task. In RE, we looked at the promises that God made to Abraham, as well as Abraham's sacrifice.
Year 5:
This week in Maths, Year 5 have been revisiting column addition and solving word problems using column addition. In English, we have been using direct speech in our writing and extending our sentences using relative clauses. In RE, we have been writing our own Canticle of Creation and, in Geography, we have been learning about famous landmarks and the history of Mexico.
In PE, we created our own routines in dance and continued learning new skills in Gaelic Football.
Year 6:
This week we have been writing our HOT Task in English: a narrative fantasy description. In Reading, we have continued with 'Brightstorm' and, in Maths, we have started to practise and improve our calculation methods. In Geography, we looked at Chichen Itza and, in Science, we looked at a real heart. In PE, we continued to improve our Netball and Hockey skills. In RE, we have looked at Old Testament stories.
