What we have been learning this week.....
Nursery:
This week the nursery have been looking at autumn vegetables, looking at colours, shapes and smells. Then we used autumn colours to print with them. The children have been fantastic in Maths this week, matching lots of different resources, including matching by shape and size.
Our nursery rhyme this week has been ‘Wheels on the Bus’ and, in our RSE topic, we have revisited the story of creation by singing ‘God Created', see if the children can sing it to you at home.
Reception:
This week Reception have started to learn all about the different seasons. We read the story ‘Stick Man’ to help us think about what happens in each season and enjoyed exploring our outdoor area, where we made leaf crowns with the fallen leaves. We have been impressing our teachers with our super phonics knowledge, writing the initial sounds for different autumnal objects. In Maths, we have been thinking about the numbers 1, 2 and 3 and their composition. Our learning about the creation story has continued this week and we have said some lovely prayers to God to say thank you for his wonderful creations. We then thought about how we could look after these creations.
Year 1:
This week we have started our new book 'Winnie the Pooh Meets the King'. We have really enjoyed listening to the description of London and all about Pooh Bear's adventures. For our Hot Task we will be persuading people to visit London, thinking carefully about using our capital letters and full stops. Also this week, we have enjoyed exploring the school to help us create a simple map in our Geography lesson. In RE, we thought back to our visit last week from Father Stan and Father Arthur and practised some responses that are said during Mass.
Year 2:
This week we have continued our dance unit in PE about Penguin Small. We moved our bodies in different ways to retell the story. We have also learnt about how to use expanded noun phrases in our writing. We have started our new unit in Maths for addition and subtraction. We have explored number bonds to and within 10 and 20. We thought about how we can become real eco warriors by thinking of ways to help our environment and the impact of global warming on the world.
Next week, we will be continuing our learning on addition and subtraction and will also be writing our own information text about penguins.
Year 3:
This week we have been using Maths journaling to recap our unit on place value. In English, we have started to look at instruction writing, using the text 'How to Wash a Woolly Mammoth'. In Reading, we are continuing our work on Black Dog. In PE, we have enjoyed gymnastics, using all the equipment and improving our football skills. In Science, we have been learning about different types of skeletons. Finally, in RE, we have been thinking about the structure of Mass, the importance of the Eucharist and the difference between good and bad choices.
Year 4:
This week we have written our hot task, which was a narrative using the characters and setting which we have been creating in the last couple of weeks. We have moved onto addition and subtraction in Maths, particularly focusing on adding two 4-digit numbers whilst exchanging. In Geography this week we learnt what it would be like to go to school in a country which has regular earthquakes, and we did a practice drill of an earthquake alarm, hiding under our tables for safety. In Science, we completed an enquiry to investigate how food moves through our digestive system.
Year 5:
This week we have started our new genre in writing, still linked to our text, 'Holes'. We are focusing on non-chronological reports and have analysed the features of what makes a good report. In Maths, we have moved on to multiplying and dividing, recapping what we have learnt in Year 4 and building upon this. In Science, we have learnt about gestation periods in mammals and the correlation between the weight of the animal and the length of gestation. In RE, we have started our next unit, 'Miracles and the Sacrament of the Sick'. In PE, we have continued line dancing and Gaelic football. Finally, in Geography, we have continued learning about Mexico, this week focusing on the festivals that they celebrate.
Year 6:
This week we have been continuing to practise calculation methods.
In English, we have started a new writing task about writing descriptively.
In Reading, we are continuing with 'Brightstorm'. In RE, we are looking at what is needed to become a follower of Jesus. In Geography, we have looked at the positive and negative effects of tourism. In Art, we are creating our final piece of inspired work. In Spanish, we continue to look at Healthy Lifestyles and, in PE, we are practising Hockey and Netball. In Science, we have looked at blood and created a 'blood model'.
