MFL
MFL curriculum overview
Our curriculum aims to offer ‘Excellence for all, through Jesus’ love'.
With Jesus at the heart, we intend to provide:
- Excellence for all children.
- Excellence for all staff.
- Excellent spaces and opportunities to learn.
‘A high-quality languages education should foster pupils’ curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world. The teaching should enable pupils to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and to understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and in writing.’
National Curriculum: Languages
Our Languages curriculum at St Modwen’s celebrates the cultural diversity of our school and allows children to begin developing the skills necessary to speak and write in another language. Our languages curriculum is taught explicitly in KS2 as we recognise the importance of establishing a firm foundation in the English language before developing bilingualism further. As children move through our languages curriculum, they will develop an understanding of basic conversational skills in Spanish, and build a useful vocabulary centered around families, colours, the classroom and the animal kingdom. Our children will recognise the similarities and differences between Spanish and the English language. They will partake in a range of oral and written activities to consolidate their new knowledge and skills. We use the high-quality online platform Language Angels to support the delivery of MFL at St Modwen’s.
