We would love to share with you what has been happening in school this week. Please read below to find out what each year group has been learning .....
Nursery:
This week the children have continued their learning around the story of the 'Owl Babies'. In Maths, the children have been learning how to match objects of colour and size. They have reinforced this by making towers with the multi link and then making a matching one to show they are the same.
Some of the children have also been into hymn practice this week. They have impressed Mr Brassington with their good sitting and listening skills and joining in with the action songs. This will continue with a different group each week.
Reception:
This week Reception discovered that Mr Penguin had disappeared! We were worried about where he had gone, so we made missing posters to try and find him. On Tuesday we received a book in the post telling us all about his next adventure! We read 'Lost and Found' and used our Talk for Writing actions to retell the story. We were so pleased to learn that Mr Penguin had made a new friend. In Maths, we have been exploring the numbers 4 and 5 and finding the number bonds. We have been using objects to help us with this.
Year 1:
We have been writing advent promises in RE and exploring the liturgical colours. In English, we have been writing our Hot Task which was to retell the story of Leaf. In Maths, we have been using the squares to write subtraction number sentences.
Year 2:
It's been an exciting week in Year 2 as we have been able to get practising our Nativity on the stage in the hall! This has really helped us to get into our roles ready for the big performance. Thank you for your support at home in learning lines and sourcing costumes. We finished our English unit on Monday with our Hot Task, where we wrote a diary entry as Vlad the flea in the Great Fire of London. We have tackled some tricky maths, learning to use the column method to add 2 two-digit numbers with exchanging. In RE, we have looked at Saint Francis of Assisi and his life, discussing how we could be more like him in our lives today.
Year 3:
This week we have been really focussing on our column addition and subtraction skills in Maths. We have also been making decisions when trying to solve word problems. In English, we have started our new book called 'The Bear and the Piano' and have been writing some excellent descriptive sentences about this. In Science, we have started our new topic all about plants. We are currently investigating whether a parsley plant or a mini succulent will last the longest without water. Finally, in RE, we have come to the end of our topic on Reconciliation and have been learning all about the Act of Contrition.
Year 4:
We thoroughly enjoyed the workshop we attended led by a mediaeval knight. We loved pretending to be minstrels and also cleaning the knight's armour. During Maths, we have been improving our multiplication skills and have been focusing on the 6 and 9 times tables. We have completed our newspaper hot task in English using the skills we have developed over the past couple of weeks. Using a WAGOLL as well as our story map really helped us to create a factually correct, well-structured report. In History, we were fascinated to discover the impact that WW1 had on our local area.
Year 5:
We have been studying the Battle of Britain and the impact of the Blitz. We have used this as inspiration for our writing. In Reading, we have explored the use of vocabulary and synonyms and antonyms. In Maths, we have begun our fractions unit, looking at equivalent fractions and converting between mixed numbers and improper fractions. In Spanish, we learnt how to describe our house. In RE, we have just finished our topic on the Sacrament of the Sick and have been busy preparing our classroom in preparation for Advent.
Year 6:
Year 6 have had their assessment week this week. We have also been practising our Spanish vocabulary and learning words for classroom equipment. In History, we have looked at when the Queen took her throne and, in Science, we have continued to look at inheritance. In RE, we studied the story of how Levi answered the call to become a disciple despite being a sinner.
