We would love to share with you what has been happening in school this week. Please read below to find out what each year group has been learning .....
Nursery:
This week the children have been learning about Advent. We had a lovely liturgy with Mrs Sherratt and Miss Smith in the library. The children listened carefully, were very prayerful and learnt a new song about the advent candles. They dressed the crib with the characters from the nativity, and then they were shown the Advent bag that will be coming home with a child each night. Please support your child’s learning by sharing and talking about the resources in the bag.
Reception:
On Monday, we returned from assembly to find sticks, leaves and a story map left in our classroom. We read through the story map and it reminded us about the story 'Stick Man', so we read the story and have enjoyed talking about the adventures he went on through the seasons. We have been very creative outside and used lots of different materials to make parts of the story. We have been practising the Christmas play and can't wait for you to see it next week!
Year 1:
This week we have been writing Advent prayers about those who may be alone this year. We have asked God to help the sick get better, the homeless to find shelter and for nobody to feel lonely this Christmas. We decorated our Christmas tree on the 1st and the naughty elf arrived to cause a lot of mischief. We attended Mass on Thursday where Father lit the first Advent candle, Hope. We remembered everyone in our prayers.
Year 2:
We are truly in the Christmas spirit in Year 2! Our nativity is almost ready to be performed, and we have even had a dress rehearsal with costumes this week! We can't wait to show off our hard work; bring your tissues, it's cute!
We have finished addition and subtraction in Maths, and we are starting 2D and 3D shapes this week.
In English, we are preparing for our Hot Task - a non-chronological report about the Great Fire. The children are now really knowledgeable about this and have been learning new vocabulary to help them with their task.
We have truly enjoyed the start of Advent, and the magical session spent with Mrs Sherratt and Miss Smith. We sat around the twinkly tree and talked through the importance of this time in our calendar. The children have also begun to take home our class prayer bags, so that they can share with the class their thoughts and prayers at this magical time.
Year 3:
We have started a new unit in Maths all about multiplication and division, we are really trying hard with our times tables and will be using TT Rockstars a lot over the next few weeks. In English, we have been continuing our work on 'The Bear and the Piano' and in reading have started to work on a new book called 'Black Dog'. We are very excited as Advent has started as we prepare for Christmas. In RE, we have been learning all about the Advent wreath and have created our own class Jesse Tree. We have also begun to learn all of our Christmas songs, in preparation for our carol singing in town, we hope to see you all there!I
Year 4:
This week, we have been looking at the organisational devices of a recipe. We followed a recipe to help us make a trench cake, then we wrote our own recipe, using everything that we have learnt. In History, we learnt about the Battle of the Somme and, in Maths, we have continued with our multiplication and division unit and have been practising our 3, 6, 7 and 9 times tables and division. On Tuesday, we took part in a rolling worship with Mrs Sherratt and Miss Smith, which helped us think about what we would like to pray for during Advent.
Year 5:
This week we have continued to learn more about fractions including converting between mixed numbers and improper fractions. In English, we used drama to gain an insight into the lives of those affected by bombing during the Blitz. We then used these quotes in our Newspaper report. In Reading, we worked on retrieving evidence from a text using scanning. In RE, we began our Advent topic and have learnt about the two reasons we prepare during Advent. We also explored Old Testament scripture which foretold the birth of Jesus. In Art, we started to construct our final piece - a World War II-inspired silhouette artwork which uses tape resistance.
Year 6:
This week we have been using fractions in calculations. In English, we have started to use 'The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe' as our stimulus for writing a narrative. In Reading, we have started 'The Raven' by Edgar Allan Poe. In History, we are looking at the British Empire. In PE, we have constructed our own dances and practised our football skills. In RE, we have looked at the meaning of Advent. In Spanish, we have continued to learn vocabulary associated with the classroom.
