History curriculum overview
Our curriculum aims to offer ‘Excellence for all, through Jesus’ love.’
With Jesus at the heart, we intend to provide:
- Excellence for all children.
- Excellence for all staff.
- Excellent spaces and opportunities to learn.
‘A ‘high-quality history education will help pupils gain a coherent knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world. It should inspire pupils’ curiosity to know more about the past.’
National Curriculum: History
Our History curriculum at St Modwen’s is built around three major themes: Game-changing events (Events that have defined or influenced an area’s history), Key players in history (Influential figures/communities in history whose impact is still relevant today) and Changes in history, including empires and civilisations. (Building chronology over time). As children move through our history curriculum, they will develop an ever-broadening understanding of historical themes such as monarchy, war, empire, and government. Our children will recognise how historians learn from the past and scrutinise sources of information for their legitimacy. They will partake in rich learning opportunities around Remembrance Day, black history month and other significant historical anniversaries. Our Humanities curriculum is structured to leave space for knowledge to embed - this knowledge is revisited when the particular aspect of Humanities is not being taught through regular low-stakes quizzing.
